The buzzword “gigabit society” primarily illustrates the need for an efficient digital infrastructure that guarantees the exchange of large amounts of data at high data transmission rates, as a prerequisite for the transformation of society into advanced stages of the digital information age.

The term “gigabit age” is used synonymously.
