Digitization: Scope

Digitalization is the formative development of our time. It affects all aspects of human life: economy and technology. Society and politics. Science and art.

The digital change induced by digitization marks a turn of time and heralds the beginning of a new era in the history of mankind: The digital information age. In its significance and scope, digitization is on a par with the major innovation-induced turning points in human history, such as the invention of writing, printing and the steam engine.

In times of fundamental change, the foundations are being laid for the future. For the individual, the company, the industry and society as a whole. At such historical turning points, the competition of the future is decided in all domains: knowledge, values, prosperity. Digitalization therefore offers enormous opportunities. At the same time, it presents completely new challenges. The intelligent shaping of digital transformation is therefore crucial for the future prospects of citizens, companies and entire economies.

Digitisation:
A strategic challenge

The strategic challenge of digitisation lies in the multitude of innovations, the incalculability of their interplay and the complexity of the systems affected.

Those who want to shape digital transformation need to understand how digital change is manifesting itself and what conditions will shape the digital age.

Digitization is being driven by a large number of isolated innovations. While many are fascinated by the flood of new applications, algorithms and automats, a much more fundamental change is taking place – the change of complex functional structures in their entirety.

Organizations, value chains, markets and entire societies – digital transformation leads to a fundamental transformation of the structure and functional logic of systems in all domains. Not only software and hardware are affected. Their truly disruptive potential usually unfolds when technical innovations cause a transformation of economic, social and political systems.

A prerequisite for the development of successful strategies is to fully understand the transformative character of digitization. It is important to assess what effects digital innovations will have on the structure and functional logic of a particular system. Complicating factors are the multitude of innovations, the unpredictability of their interaction and the complexity of the systems under consideration. In their combination, these three factors lead to a situation that is characterized by extreme confusion and uncertainty which makes the development of promising strategies a highly difficult task to do.

Digitalization: Strategy development

How is this challenge to be met? Complexity and uncertainty are not new. Thus, we can draw on a proven analytical instrumentarium for dealing with complexity: Systematization. Abstraction. Conceptualization. In order to adequately assess the transformative character of digitization, a conceptual basis is required that is based on these analytical instruments. Five tasks have to be fulfilled: It is necessary to classify innovations and trends, to show interrelationships between innovations, to show the link between innovations and individual systems, to derive scenarios and to develop strategies.

With the “Digital Era Framework” Dr. Dr. Jörn Lengsfeld presented such a conceptual approach. It is designed to foster a systematic analysis as a basis for the development of scenarios and strategies. The Digital Era Framework serves as a frame of reference for putting the various developments into the relevant context, relating the phenomena of change to one another and forming an overall picture of the various trends.

Dr. Dr. Jörn Lengsfeld’s model is focused on the very core of digitization. At the heart of digital transformation is the change in the form information manifests itself and the resulting shift in the way information is handled. Digitisation expands the capabilities of humans to obtain, process and disseminate information. This results in fundamental implications for people’s thinking, decisions, communication and actions.

The change in the manifestation of information and the advancement of information processing are the primordial cause of the various individual developments that constitute digital transformation and shape the digtal age. Therefor they should be used as the starting point for analysis and strategy development.
